Ray Brown 1926 - 2002

In Memoriam

On July 2, 2002 the jazz world lost its heartbeat; Ray Brown passed away.  Musically, he set the standard for time, swing, tone, flowing bass lines, clever note choices and imaginative solo journeys.  He was also a fine (and demanding) teacher.  No player before or since has been able to match Ray when he was in the groove, rocking his bass back and forth and smiling.

But his music was only part of what made Ray great.  Through his kindness, humor and generosity, he constantly showed everyone around him how they could and should live to reach their full potential; he simply made our world a better place.  Ray's instructions could not have been clearer; his example could not have been stronger.  It's on us now.
